Neothauma Shells
Assorted hand-picked empty Neothauma tanganyicense shells from Lake Tanganyika. For a biotope-authentic aquarium decor for shell dwelling cichlids.

The shells of dead Neothauma tanganyicense often form carpets over large areas, and are used by a number of other animals, such as cichlid fish (shell dwellers),and freshwater crabs of the genus Platythelphusa.

The empty shells are found in great abundance along many beaches of Lake Tanganyika. Crushed into powder and mixed with water, the shells are often used as emulsion paint by locals. The powder is also mixed in mortar and clay when constructing houses in lake shore communities.
